Lake District Holiday cottages come in all shapes and sizes. Yew Tree is far from typical and this is true both inside and out. Whilst many holiday homes offer a no-frills - read no thrills - approach to their outdoor areas, we hope our visitors agree that the garden at Yew Tree is truly outstanding. The gardens are laid out as described and you can scroll down to view images of the garden at its best.
Yew Tree occupies a corner plot on the single street in the village of Melkinthorpe but once cocooned in the garden you will find yourself hidden from view. The formal garden at the front of the house is jam-packed with luscious country cottage plants and at the height of summer it's possible to settle here and become completely invisible to passers by.
To the side of the house and cleverly screened by beech hedging is small pond, a 'woodland' inspired garden and a lawned area. The greenhouse and vegetable plot lie at the rear of this area . We try every year to ensure there will be some goodies in the garden for guests, although some years are more successful than others! There are always herbs, planted in the vegetable garden and, very conveniently for the kitchen, in the walls to the pergola area.
This last section of the garden is at the rear of the house and the pergola in summer is wreathed with wisteria, honeysuckle, golden hop, jasmine, clematis and Japanese chocolate vine. There is a large ciruclar table and six chairs which make it a great place to enterain or simply relax on a warm evening. The pergola is opposite the glazed bi-folding doors which allow inside and outside to mingle as you eat and relax.
At the back of the garden adjacent to the back door, and just beyod the pergola, is a gravelled area which can be used as parking or, if you prefer, adapts well as a small, courtyard area, which is kept beautifully private with large bi-folding wooden gates leadting to the adjacent lane.
