ABOUT  YEW TREE

Ten years ago Yew Tree was described by the local council as unfit for human habitation.  Undaunted, the current owner, Mark,  bought the house and ignored suggestions that tearing down the 18th century cottage and popping up a nice new-build might be the best option.

Thankfully, Mark persisted and what followed was a long story.   The short version is that Yew Tree was subjected to a labour of love and the original cottage was transformed into a stylish, modern home that retains the core of the original cottage but doesn't scrimp on contemporary style and functionality.

Melkin-where?

Melkinthorpe is situated a few miles south of Penrith and a short distance from Ullswater.  Unlike many overcrowed Lake District villages, Melkinthorpe potters on at its own quiet pace.  Staying at Yew Tree gives you access to the Eden Valley, The Lake District, The Pennines and Cumbria from one central and very easy to reach location.  The peaceful village will also give you a taste of the slower pace of life in the 'real' Cumbria.  The county has two National Parks (the Lake District and a chunk of the Yorkshire Dales), two AONBs (the Solway Coast and The North Pennines) and some splendid and largely 'undiscovered' landscapes, including the Eden Valley, in which to lose yourself, relax and reconnect with nature.  Cumbria has a diverse set of landscapes to explore and Yew Tree is right in the middle of them.

THE HOUSE

Yew Tree comprises three double bedrooms all with king sized double beds, one of which is ensuite, and a good sized family bathroom.  On the ground floor there is a large, comfortable living room with wood burning stove and plenty of luxurious seating.  There is also a large open-plan family room which includes a spacious, well equipped kitchen, dining area, with breakfast seating at the large central island and a further sitting area with a large and very comfortable sofa to crash on.  There's a small lobby with downstairs WC and also a utility room with washing machine, drier and freezer plus an additional sink.   To view the accommodation and facilities click here.

tHE gARDEN

The gardens at Yew Tree create an extra set of 'outdoor' rooms featuring fully mature and cleverly designed  planting.  To the front is a more formal country cottage garden whilst to the side a pond, a lawned area and a woodland garden can be explored.  A greenhouse and vegetable garden  - you are welcome to help yourself to any produce when it's available - are to the rear of the house as is a pergola area with a large table and seating.  There are two parking areas and the whole garden is discreetly screened, creating an atmosphere of seclusion and privacy.  To view the gardens click here.
